Teniersâs Life
We know almost nothing about David the Younger's activities during the 1670s. With the exception of a few paintings from this decade, which prove that he was still painting, the records are silent. This is in keeping with the quiet nature of his later years.
The last decade of his life was filled with conflicts and sorrow. A clear picture of what actually transpired during these years has not emerged, But David the Younger became embroiled in a long-lasting legal dispute with his children during the early 1680s. The first records of this dispute come from 1683, although we may presume that the conflict began several years before, perhaps even shortly after the death of Anna Brueghel in 1656. Teniers was reluctant to pay Anna's children the inheritance left them in her testament of 1656. Since the estate was to have been equally divided among the four remaining children, the inheritance must have been intended to be in the form of partial compensations or interest on the value of the estate until David the Younger himself should die. This is indicated in letters written by David the Younger to his sons, David III and Leopold.1
Anna's children, led by David III and Leopold, claimed that their stepmother was alienating their father from them, presumably in favor of herself and her own children. David III filed suit for the inheritances sometime in 1683. The charges against David the Younger appear in a statement notarized by Ferdinand Du Mont in Brussels during this year.2
If he were reluctant to pay, David the Younger was equally reluctant to engage in lawsuits with his own children. In March 1683 he wrote two notarized letters to David III and Leopold in which he promised to pay the claims of all his children. These letters contain his protests that the concessions and interests that he would have to pay were too costly for a man of his income.
Soo pretendere ick by deser schrifte U. L. door notaris ende twee getuyghen geinsumeert dat U. L. voor syne portie suit hebben juste afcortinghe to doen . . . protestere ick ten hoochten van schaede ende interest.3
So I promise you by this letter before a notary and two witnesses assembled that you shall have justice for your portions paid on account (or paid in partial payments) . . . I protest to the high amount of the concessions and interests.
